Orphaned as a child when his parents were killed by Kazama Shintaro, a Tojo Clan assassin working for the Dojima family
Bounced around in the system until he ended up at Sunflower Orphanage, where he met Nishikiyama Akira and Sawamura Yumi, who became his closest friends. The orphanage was financed by Kazama Shintaro, who took a shine especially to the three.
At the age of 12, during a raid conducted by the Dojima family on a Korean mafia organization, he tried to protect Kazama Shintaro which resulted in the deaths of several men.
Swore up to the Dojima family at age 17, much to Kazama's dismay: worked bodyguard duty for Dojima Daigo, debt collection, and enforcement.
At age 20, was framed for murder, was kicked out from the family, worked with a real estate mogul to change the fate of the line of succession for the Tojo Clan, lost his first love, took out the Dojima lieutenant behind the plot, was named the Dragon of Dojima.
Worked his way up to lieutenant in the Dojima family dutifully over eight years, with loyal men who he treated well who respected and appreciated him. Was in the fast track to a family of his own when his bonded brother, Nishiki, also a member of the Dojima family, created a situation that ended up with their friend Yumi being assaulted wherein he shot Sohei Dojima, their patriarch. Kiryu willingly took the rap for this murder and spent 10 years in jail.
Came back to a scramble for succession for the spot of chairman, wherein he picked up a little girl and lost Yumi who apparently loved him and fucked over a government official, as well as lost Nishiki who had become a fucking rat bastard who basically hated him for existing.
Named Fourth Chairman of the Tojo Clan.
Adopted a little girl and tried to leave yakuza after setting up a replacement.
Replacement turned out to be a member of the guys from that Korean mafia group ho survived, and planned on blowing up the city.
Pulled Dojima Daigo in and saw him placed as Sixth Chairman after they saved the city together.
Next few years have a ton of various shenanigans where despite trying to live as a civilian, he keeps getting pulled back into the Yakuza life to save the clan and fuck over the government/cops/Omi Alliance (their enemies) including one that lands him in jail again for 3 years.
Gets out of jail to find his daughter is in a coma, had a baby boy, and no idea why the fuck she was hit by a car.
Reveals a warship to the world that the Japanese government had been hiding and was offered the chance to come to the Barge when the government strong arms him into faking his death and walking away from everyone for their own safety.
Works for the government for several years to protect his family (both yakuza and civilian) until a situation happens with the Tojo Clan that he's invited to which turns out to be the dissolution of the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance.
Goes back in time using a deal to relive his decisions when he sees how badly this dissolution went to stay as chairman himself and used all his knowledge of the previous timeline to avoid a LOT of death, loss, bullshit, and act against certain legislation.
Currently fourth chairman of the Tojo Clan which is 40,000 men strong and allied with the Omi and Yomai.
Highlights include:
- fighting his way through a castle full of ninjas and fistfighting two tigers while being poisoned by a still-open stab wound
- fighting off a small army of government agents from the Japanese government and the CIA
- taking down his own adopted son, Dojima Daigo, when he almost worked with the government to put the yakuza under government supervision
- one dude who was clearly in love with his son who went bonkers when he thought he was going to lose him (Mine)
- another dude who was obsessed with Kiryu as the guy to beat, as THE legend of the yakuza world (Aizawa) who Kiryu beat the tar out of
- yet another dude who was definitely obsessed with Kiryu in a LOT of ways and desperately wanted him to be chairman, HIS chairman, who was violently reactive at any mention of Kiryu (who he tried to save at the end but who was killed when his allies fucked him over)
- challenging 100 armed yakuza to a duel at the same time and winning easily
- giving up his kids and his daughter to make sure they aren't tainted by his being in the yakuza as Haruka tried to make it as a famous singer
- losing his protege, a young man named Rikiya, who gave his life to save him from a stray bullet (reversed by deal)
- defeating a kraken and a giant shark under the water
- defeating ghost pirates and sending them to eternal rest
- taking down the Amon family, his world's greatest assassins, six times
- beating a world famous race car driver at a drag race in a taxi
- taking on at least five different personal armies at various points, by himself.
- coordinating treaties with two other major (and several minor) yakuza organizations throughout Japan
