Character Name: Kiryu Kazuma (western order: Kazuma Kiryu)
Canon: Yakuza / Ryu Ga Gotoku
Canon Point: post Yakuza 6, pre Yakuza 7
Background: Kiryu @ Yakuza Wiki
Suitability: Kiryu is definitely the sort of man who engages with any plot put in front of him; he literally can't help getting involved if there's a problem to be solved, innocents in danger, or people could get hurt. Given the canon point I'm pulling him from, he'll even be somewhat relieved to no longer be on his world as he is considered 'dead' there by most people and this will give him some distance from all he left behind. That said, he'll no doubt quickly consider this world 'home', in the sense of a place that he has a responsibility to try and take care of.
Powers: ...he's basically a superhero. While ostensibly a baseline human, literally every single person he fights is absolutely flabbergasted at his strength, speed, stamina, and constitution. He's called a 'beast', a 'monster', 'inhuman' etc. and he does completely impossible things like take on 100 armed gangsters by himself all at once with all the confidence of someone saying that they'll head down to the 7-11 to pick up some beer. Not only that, but honestly, he takes bullets like a champ and can take and keep fighting with an incredible amount of damage. While not an intellectual, on almost any practical skill he gets to be not just good at it but stupidly good at it, including everything from club management to street racing to baseball to acting to spearfishing and bowling. Fighting? He's a godbeast. In a fight, he shrugs off hits from people like he barely felt them, hits like a mack truck, and has literally canonically never lost a fight. He is considered the top disciple of the one martial arts master who decided to train him, and he can utilize what's known as 'heat' (the heat of battle) to do things like shield himself from blows and bullets/swords, perform insane acts of martial prowess, hit even harder, move even faster, and even heal his wounds. This is definitely some sort of supernatural activity as it involves wreathing parts of his body in blue/yellow/pink/red/white flames and I would imagine any nerf would take this away from him, as well as any of the more ridiculous superhuman aspects even if he would keep the years of brawling experience and moves.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them. ...that could be a list, because honestly, the events of every game heavily impact him. But I think the most impactful would be the death of Tachibana Tetsu. It taught Kiryu that no matter how strong you are and how hard you try, sometimes things don't work out. Sometimes, you can't save someone. Sometimes, all you can do is avenge them and help carry their will out into the world. It's this beautiful, horrible 'heroic' moment where they rush to save him but they're just a little too late and everything kind of gets ruined in that moment. I also think it taught him how to pick himself up from something like that, how to find the strength to go on, to find the cause even after the person you were fighting for has fallen. In many ways, his journey in Y0 is an encapsulation of everything he goes through in the rest of the games and this death is the big crushing blow that helps forge him into who he is.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by? Despite being a civilian for most of the series, he strictly follows the yakuza code of ethics, as well as his own personal code which boils down to 'help everyone you can, do the least harm, use your strength to care for others, especially the weak and those that society has turned away from'. He's super honorable, and tends to sacrifice his own happiness for that of other people, especially those he loves even if he doesn't always get it right.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Strength, conviction, and honor. Strength because it allows you to take action and make a difference, conviction because you should believe in something if you're going to take action, and honor because you ought to do it right. He doesn't just value fighting prowess as strength, though: kindness is strength to him, as is the ability to know your own weaknesses and accept help, the ability to plan and strategize, those who are good with numbers and money.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
...absolutely. Kiryu definitely has self-destructive tendencies. So much of his life seems to indicate that his presence brings suffering and ruin to the people around him and while he can't live any other way, he doesn't always like the fact that he has to step in when he sees something going on because he knows it costs people more often than it costs him. In the end, it's why he stepped away from his family at the end of his game series: he thought he could take care of them better by removing himself from their lives and letting them live in peace.
What is their sign, and why? Kiryu is the Tower, for a LOT of reasons. He matches the description to a t, but more than that, he matches a lot of the elements of the traditional tarot card. He's both someone who frequently has his life situation taken out of his control; the fates move and he has to respond as best he can as the world changes beneath his feet AND for many characters, HE is the world-changing force that blows through every few years and completely changes the face of the underworld's landscape. He appreciates the structure of the system but doesn't do well within it and almost always has to break it before he can do his best work. One term for yakuza is gokudo, the extreme path, and he live that pretty much all the time. There's no inbetween for him; his life is either peace or chaos and he is the same. There's also the fact that A Tower has had a huge impact on his life, starting with the very land that the tower was built on and continuing with most of the major confrontations happening at the top. He's even (lol for imagery) changed someone's life so much that they ended up diving off the side of a tall building to save his life/the life of someone they loved so he's quite literally been that for some people.
SAMPLES & ARRIVAL
Samples: TDM Thread
Arrival Scenario: WELCOMED. The man's spent 13 years in prison, so this will be different for him, and from experience, he's deeply uncomfortable with being praised for his exploits since all he can see is the cost.
